Tow hooks/points and a proper tow strap are HIGHLY recommended. Many areas do require 31" tires or larger. Skilled drivers are available to guide all JeepSkool attendee's.

What happens if I get stuck?
Don't keep digging and bury yourself to the frame. If you're not making meaningful progress – STOP. A simple call on the CB or a walk to the trail head and you can flag down help. Your rig will be safe unattended here. Everyone is very friendly and helpful at JeepSkool and someone will be by to pull you out if you wait a few minutes. Staff is not responsible for your recovery.

While on a trail ride with others, the guy behind me is no longer there. what do I do?

I've noticed that the JeepSkool event on Oct 18-19 seems to be very family friendly, which I'm really good with because I love jeepin with the family. I've also noticed that you have a shooting range on the property and wondered if that would be closed while the offroad event was going on. Just looking out for the safety of the kids and all

Eric,

Thanks for your Q. The first thing we do after we arrive at the property and start the trail ride is stop at the gun range and make sure that ALL are aware of it's location. Secondly, the gun range is protected on three sides by a 75' wall and two 20' side berms.
http://southingtonhuntclub.com/SHCGAL/1/images/gunrange%20(5)_jpg.jpg

There are enough trails on the property you could avoid the range and never miss anything. Or, if you choose to properly educate the lil' ones the rules of the range. I'm always available to help the young shooters. ;)

We have yet to lose anybody in 12yrs. ;) And we take the safety of all our guest very seriously. Law Enforcement and police Dept's are regulars here, and there is nothing out of line going on at Southington Hunt Club.

Thanks for your Q. Hope that helps :D

You are welcome to use the class III gun range. I'm sure you will not be alone. 8-)

Post your tire request in the buy/sell/trade section.

I peeked in on DaBen and his very cute lil' one, and saw dad taking GOOD care of the young one. Very safe ;)

Happy shooting

Am I correct in understanding that new people can only come on Sunday? Are there designated times (i.e. an itinerary) to leave or can you leave at any time?

Just want to be back in time for a clam bake at 2:00pm.

8-) If you check in on Sat, your free to come and go as you please till Sunday close.
You don't have to go home, But you can't stay here.
You must check in at Haylett's if you are coming for a Sunday only ride. Again, you are free to leave at any time. 8-)

Thanks for all your Q's.

A couple quick newbie questions:

I have tow points on the front bumper, but have a hitch on the back. It's attached to the chassis, so I can't put a hook on the frame area like a lot of people do. Is this a concern for the first time out, or is there another easy way to pull us newbies out if we get stuck?

In regards to preparation, puppy piles 30" tires on a stock sahara. Anything else I should do to prep the vehicle that those of us who haven't gone offroad might not think of? Will the inside likely get wet and should the carpet be pulled out ahead of time (or just clean it later)? Obviously nothing loose on the inside that might fly around. I'll remove the small sub I have in the back. I'm going to test disconnecting my swaybar just to ensure the bolts aren't locked up hard prior to arriving.

Throw up any other "obvious" tips, tricks, etc that us rookies or stock people might not even think of the first time out.

The rear hitch has chain loops for towing so someone can use them to attach a clevis for snatching if need be, so you're good there.

You say you have puppy piles 30" tires, that could be a problem depending on where you go. They won't provide any traction in muddy areas, but then again, someone can snatch you through.

Realistically, unless you're deliberately trying to beat your rig, you should have problems with water to worry about the interior. If your going to beat any of the mud pits and especially with puppy piles tires, then expect to have lots of mud inside, then you might be concerned about the carpet.

The front and rear snatch points are the most needed. Anything else, someone else will probably have or help you with and you'll learn based on your own experience what else you may want next time.

Come, enjoy and have fun.

RokleM wrote:Thanks, upgrades are planned, but I wanted to take it out in stock form at least once.

The tires are just 30" Jetzon road-ish tires that came with the used Jeep. I didn't figure they would work out too well in the mud ;)

No plans to purposely beat up the vehicle. I just saw a lot of water pictures, pretty high up on vehicles that were already lifted with larger tires, that's why I asked about water/carpet issues with a stock suspension/tires.

Anyone else have ideas/suggestions for first time offroaders or stock jeeps?

I have hooks on the front and just a reese hitch on the back - I slide the loop of one of the big nylon straps inside it and poke the pin in it. Works great and it does not fall off. A lot of you seen the stuff I was pulling out with that setup. I was pulling out tree stumps this month with it. The little loops on the hitch bend easy with a clevis hook - and those clevis hooks are a safety hazard as some of us seen last time out when Robocon was pulling out his JK. Its a good thing no one was in the way of that. If those cut loose - they are like a bullet. I recommend 20,000lb or higher rated nylon straps with loops on the ends - no hooks. Those can be found at Farm supply stores for $25.

I have carpet inside my Cherokee - I just have the big mud mats from Wallyworld and those keep it pretty clean. There was only that Beaver Crossing last month and its been taken care of. The rest of the deep stuff was optional. Wear shoes/clothes you don't care about - they will get muddy.... don't fret if you get some mud on the seats - it comes off easy when it dries.

Bring a lunch & snacks, camera. Bring a tool box, duct tape, couple bungy cords, leather work gloves, change of clothes, toilet paper(just in-case) and secure it all. Basically - be prepared.
AND MAKE SURE YOU ARE READY TO HAVE FUN!

If I bring my tent and camping supplies, is there a place to store them while off roading? Will they be safe to leave at a campsite? I do not have enough space in my Jeep to secure all the camping gear I will bring..

The camping area is well inside the property. If we can't trust fellow JeepSkool'ers, then we have a bigger issue ;) I don't see any concern with leaving whatever you need to back at camp. As well, honestly almost every single time I passed by, someone was there checking in, picking up something, grabbing a snack, relaxing for a bit, etc.

I leave my Jeep unlocked, keys in it while I'm at JeepSkool. You don't have to worry about anything here. I have all sorts of valuables in it and don't think twice about it. Maybe I shouldn't have said anything... :? This is the safest place I have ever been to "wheel". Robocon has a tight grip on security. It is a great place to take a family to have fun.

Postby OneLoudLT1 on March 5th, 2009, 10:25 pm

Hey kelly had a quick question, i was gonna ask on this sunday but this way anyone else wondering this would help too.

I just wanted to know if there was anything in the works for a weekend where we could bring out both toys, truck and atv. I realize the huge safty risk and understand if this is a no go, just thought it would be a cool caming weekend with some truckin', avtin' ,shootin' , and livin the camping life.
